Early School Leavers Project:
The Castleblayney Early School Leavers Initiative is sponsored by Youth Work Ireland Monaghan and targets young people mainly between the ages of 12 and 15 who are at risk of early school leaving. The aim of the project is the early intervention with young people who are at risk of falling out of the mainstream education system prematurely.
In Our Ladys Secondary School and Castleblayney College the Student Support Worker is engaged with participants on a full time basis within the school system. The young people are referred to the project by the principal or teachers if they are showing signs of early school leaving such as poor attendance, poor participation, poor performance and behavioural problems. The project aims to counteract the problem of early school leaving by identifying young people who are experiencing difficulties, identifying the specific problems they are experiencing, adapting the formal education structures to cater specifically for the needs of those ‘at risk’. The common theme in this diverse model is student centred, needs based design involving individual and small group work.
In Castleblayney College the Student Support worker is also involved in the following activities: Mentoring programme for 1st years, Lunch time activities for 1st & 2nd years, Attendance trips for students with full attendance, Anti Bullying week programme, Relationship and Sexual Health Education for T.Y’s and Peer education for T.Y’s.
In Our Lady’s the Student Support Worker is also involved in different activities such as 1st year lunchtime activities, the Gaisce Awards with 4th and 5th year students. The project endeavours to assist in personal and social development of participants in conjunction with their formal schooling.
